Quality of M1 Garand rifles from the CMP??
I am considering ordering a service grade quality M1 from the CMP. What if any quality issues has anyone encountered both good and not so good from buying one?
Thanks to all that contribute experiences. |

Honesly I would just get an AR-10 or build one yourself. I think I spent about $1,200 building my DPMS .308 the way I wanted it. Don't get me wrong, M1's are great but my DPMS .308 weighs about 10 - 11 pounds and that's the biggest reason I never got an M1.

The experience should be just fine. They're good people @ DCM/CMP.

For maximum firepower I would go with a direct gas impingement AR design (DPMS). For reliability I would go with the Garand. For both I would go for either an M-14 or a newer piston AR like the LWRCI REPR. Buy the Garand with pride knowing that you will be owning one of the finest battle rifles ever employed. Bx3 |

The one I got was very nice (I got the service grade). Get the service grade or higher.

The Garand in .308 (as opposed to the "standard" Garand in .30-06) is probably the best overall compromise (capacity/reliability/weight/cost) of any .308 Win. battle rifle available ANYWHERE, in my opinion. I would buy one and not look back... provided you can get a decent one without a shot-out barrel and get a few dozen en-block clips with it or at the same time.
P.S. This is one of the few firearms you can get away with calling them "clips" with... it uses TRUE "clips", not magazines like most other firearms use. |
Re: Quality of M1 Garand rifles from the CMP??
CMP currently not as good as CMP years ago-for obvious reasons.
M1 Garand - nothing comes close to being the world's best battle tested combat weapon ever made..308 fine(but a compromise), however, in today's environment (personal armor, armored vehicles, ) nothing comes close to the hard- hitting armor piercing qualities of the 30.06 M2 AP , APIT, (black tip, silver tip etc) and this package gives one 8 rounds! A much, much more selection of pulled rounds compared to the .308.Heck, Denmark has had them in their inventory till the 90's when they returned 20,000 to the CMP.South Korea is just now returning 80,000 back to the US-they are still holding the M1 Carbines-why? Any M1 Garand is worth CMP's asking price.Any grade can be improved upon cheaply. |
Re: Quality of M1 Garand rifles from the CMP??
If I were buying a Garand for the CMP today I would pony up the extra cash and buy one of the Special Grade M1 Garands. With new barrel, stock and other parts it is sure to both look good and shoot good. The service grade guns are nice but it can be the luck of the draw as to how nice.

I have recently purchased three grades of the Garand, Service, Rack and field. The Service Grade was almost new, very pristine. The Field grade was pretty nice, but the wood was a lot more dinged. The rack grade had a bit of rust, and a bore a lot more worn, wood pretty bad, some cracks.. I would really get the Service Grade, for the few dollars more. I have replaced all the op rod springs, as 60 plus year old springs are a bit tired. Aloha Turtleguy9 |
